The upset sweep in the first round of the SIMBL postseason of this past season's top SL seed and the team with the best record in the league, the hard-luck Chicago Hitmen of GM John Bowden who had a regular season best 106-56 record, was stunning to say the least but not unprecedented in the SIMBL's long history.  In fact, the SIMBL's postseason has become to be known for the unexpected as anything can go and usually has gone on unpredictably in the previous 22 postseason in league history.

A recent "Lance's Lists" study has revealed what has long been known in the league: once a team reaches the postseason it's wide open for the elusive Coveted Cup Championship title to be theirs.

Despite the dominance of the dynasty of the San Diego Warewolves who have won ten SIMBL titles in 22 SIMBL seasons, there have been a variety of upsets in the first round and beyond if you look back at the SIMBL's postseason history.

A #1 seed in either the Union League or the Syndicate League isn't an automatic vindication to get to the finals.  In fact the opposite is so.  Only 38.6% (17/44) of the time has a #1 conference seed made it to the SIMBL CS in the past 22 seasons.  A statistic that is rather staggering considering the number of powerhouse teams the SIMBL has featured during past regular seasons that have failed to bring home a SIMBL ring despite dominating seasons until they reached the SIMBL postseason.

Even more so, only 4 times (18.8%) in the league's 22 SIMBL Coveted Cup Championship Series have both #1 seeds from both the UL and the SL met for all the marbles: 2006 San Diego Warewolves vs. Pensacola Red Sox, 2012 San Diego Warewolves vs. Los Angeles Meat Puppets, 2014 San Diego Warewolves vs. Calgary Clippers and 2023 Calgary Clippers vs. Las Vegas Hustlers.

Out of the 38.6% times (17/44) a #1 from either league has advanced to the finals, 11 times out of the 22 past SIMBL CS a top seed has won it for a 50.0% championship rate when a #1 seed from either conference reached the finals.

In a revealing of the best odds for a SIMBL playoff berth, a #1 or #2 seeded berth from either conference has advanced to the SIMBL CS 61.3% of the time (27/44) while a #1 or #2 UL or SL seed has won the SIMBL Championship 15 out of the previous 22 times for a 68.1% title rate.

22.7% of the time (10/44) has a #2 seed from either conference made it to the SIMBL CS while only 4 times (18.1%) winning it: the 2007 San Diego Warewolves, the 2013 Las Vegas Hustlers, the 2018 Calgary Clippers and the 2025 Calgary Clippers.

Eight times out of 44 previous league champions (18.1%) has a #3 seed from either league advanced to the SIMBL CS with only three times (13.0%) a #3 seed winning the title: the 2008 Pocatello Timberjacks, the 2015 Las Vegas Hustlers and the 2026 Cleveland Brownies.

Eight times out of 44 league champions (18.1%) has a wildcard #4 seed made it all the way to the SIMBL Coveted Cup Championship Series while four wildcard teams out of the past 22 title series (18.1%) have won the SIMBL Championship: the 2010 Marin Mountainmen, the 2011 Oregon Pioneers, the 2022 Hollywood Bounty Hunters and the 2024 San Diego Warewolves.

Two times of these rare occasions when a #4 wildcard seed made it all the way to the SIMBL CS did they both meet.  In 2022 the wildcard Hollywood Bounty Hunters defeated the wildcard Dallas Texans while two seasons later the wildcard San Diego Warewolves defeated the wildcard Dallas Texans as well.  Of the eight times a wildcard seed has made it all the way to the SIMBL CS, the Texans have done it the most doing it three times. 

In the 2010 SIMBL CS and was the only time a #4 seed beat a #1 seed when the former Marin Mountainmen (now Sacramento Giants) stunned the SL #1 seed San Diego Warewolves becoming the first wildcard team to win a SIMBL Championship.  Two other times a #4 seed has met a #1 seed yet has lost: 2005: #4 Bend vs. #1 San Diego and 2021: #4 Dallas vs. #1 San Diego.

While Chicago's frustrations can be understood after failing to capitalize on such a fantastic regular season, the Hitmen can relate to the Calgary Clippers who were the counterpart to San Diego's dominance in the SL as the juggernaut for most of the SIMBL's first 22 seasons in the UL.  The Clippers won 100 games six times from 2008 to 2018, including four straight seasons from 2008-2011 before they won their first franchise SIMBL Championship in 2018 at the close of the SIMBL First File Era.  The Clippers in fact started another streak of winning 100 games five more consecutive seasons from 2019-2023, including four straight seasons of 110 wins from 2020-2023 before securing their second SIMBL title in 2023.  In all, the Clippers have won 17 divisional titles and one wildcard in the SIMBL's first 22 seasons of play yet pale in comparison with only three SIMBL rings to show for it for a 3/18 rate or have won a title only 16.6% of the time they have entered the playoffs despite featuring teams that have won 100 or more games in twelve seasons and 110 or more games in six seasons.  Of the Clippers' three SIMBL championships, two have come as the #2 UL seed.

To examine furthermore, the 2026 SIMBL playoffs were the first time in the league's 22-postseason history that either the San Diego Warewolves or Calgary Clippers were not involved in as the times are apparently rolling on the current competition's new dawn in the SIMBL.
